College students are no strangers to moving. Few choose to live in the dorms all four years, and many will move several times throughout their college years. Whether it is choosing new roommates or simply desiring to have a place of one’s own, students should have a moving plan at the ready.
Have a Backup Plan
One thing is certain when moving: nothing ever goes as planned. It may end up more expensive or more time-consuming than initially planned for. This can be especially difficult for college students, who traditionally have had little to spare of either. One good way to prepare for the inevitable snags is to have a realistic backup plan. Grown and Flown explains that it’s important to have a plan for how you’re going to move. You can’t just assume you’ll be ready to move because you have boxes and bags ready to be filled. Before anyone arrives to help you move you need to be ready by having everything boxed or bagged already. Sort through the things you need, don’t need, or want. Think about what could go wrong and consider alternatives. When that good buddy — who is out of town every weekend — becomes a no-show for that Saturday morning appointment, make sure two more reliable friends are already there, even if you have to bribe them with pizza.
Make a List
When preparing for and executing a move, document the process. A list will keep the project on track. You can write up your backup plans as well. A list is also effective at documenting everything that needs to be put in boxes as well as determining which items are a priority. While you may love your plants, they would not be considered essentials. Centurion recommends that you also want to keep toiletries and similar essentials that you need in day-to-day activities in a small duffel bag. A list of essentials would include items that you would need and be able to use in your new place immediately.
Make it Fun
This last tip might seem a little strange. However, when you tap your friends and family for help, the last thing you want to do is to make your move seem like a chore. Beyond the obligatory pizza, offer an array of healthy, light snacks and juices throughout. Have upbeat music playing; it will set up a rhythm that can keep the move going when energy starts to fall. The activation of this system readies the body for action whenever we face a challenge in our environment. Moving is also a great opportunity to indulge in jokes, movie parodies, and other fun activities that will take everyone’s mind off of the occasional drudgery.
There is probably no such thing as an easy move. Yet, students sometimes find that they must tackle this task. They may want to downsize to save money, or perhaps they want to live alone to make studying easier. Planning ahead can make for an efficient and smooth move.
